How can an administration send ICE officers to airports to help manage long TSA lines, then turn around and propose cutting more than 9,400 TSA jobs and about $1.5 billion from the agency’s budget?
Reports said ICE officers were deployed to around 14 airports to help with duties such as crowd control, checking IDs before screening areas, and monitoring exits, while officials said they would not work screening lines or operate X-ray machines because they are not trained to do so. At the same time, other reports revealed a White House budget proposal that would significantly reduce TSA staffing and funding even after the agency had already been dealing with shortages and airport delays.
Reuters also reported that ICE made more than 800 arrests based on TSA-provided leads, with data involving 31,000 traveler records flagged for potential immigration enforcement.
