In this video, I break down what happened today in Davos, where President Donald Trump hosted a signing ceremony for his so-called “Board of Peace.” Around 35 countries have agreed to join so far, but critics warn that the initiative could undermine the United Nations and the existing global order.
Trump will chair the Board indefinitely and hold veto power over all its decisions. He has also asked countries to pay $1 billion for a permanent seat. Initially proposed as a body to oversee Gaza, Trump now envisions a far broader global mission for the board.
Several right-wing or authoritarian governments have joined, including Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Hungary is the only European country on board, while France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, and Slovenia have publicly declined to participate.
Trump has claimed the board will be able to act decisively where the UN has failed, stating he ended multiple wars without UN involvement. He has also invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin to join, fueling further controversy.
